INFORMATION PAGE
The wolf has been given the reputation of being a ruthless killer. But they are actually very timid animals.
The Wolf is very family oriented, infact the pack is an extended family. They take a mate for life.
Everyone in the pack helps with raising the pups. We could learn alot from the wolf.
This is MOTOMO, a wolf I sponsor
Average length from tip of nose to tip of tail 4.5 to 6.5 ft.
Average weight ranges from 60 to 110 pounds. The longer length and larger weight is for males. The average height at the shoulders is 26 to 32 inches. In the wild a wolf can live up to 13 years.
Breeding season is February to March. The pups are born about 63 days later. Litter size is about 4 to 6 pups, weighing about 1 pound each. Unfortunatly, the mortality rate for the pups ranges 40 to 60 % a year. Normally only the Alpha Male and Female will breed.
Wolves often defend against intruders by using sound rather that fury. If resident wolves hear an intruder howling, they have two choices. They can remain silent and retreat, avoiding possible attack, or they can howl back, as if to say,"We're here, come no futher".
