Howling is used to gather the pack at "rendezvous sites" before and after a hunt. A typical howling performance begins with the howl of the Alpha male, soon joined by the yaps,whines,and howls of the other pack members- never in unison and always in varying pitches. The chorus of howling wolves may be heard up to five miles away, at any time of day or night.
